Scanning & scores
What does the 0–100 score actually mean?
It's an estimate of chemical-exposure potential — how concerning a product's ingredients, packaging, and processing are based on published hazard data. Higher means more potential concern. Unless a product is marked lab-tested, a score isn't a measurement of your specific item — it's the same inputs always producing the same answer.
What can I scan?
Barcodes on food, cosmetics, cleaning products, and packaging; photos of products or their labels; links from most online stores including Amazon, Target, Walmart, and Shopify sites; and typed ingredient lists. Barcode and link scans resolve on-device — photos go through our label reader.
The app identified my product wrong. What now?
A few things help a lot: scan in good light with the label filling the frame, or fall back to the barcode — it's the most reliable input. If the extracted details still look wrong, check them in the report and send us a screenshot at [email protected] — misidentifications are how the reader improves.
Where does the hazard data come from?
Published sources only: EPA CompTox, California Prop 65, EU REACH SVHC, EFSA tolerable daily intakes, IARC, and independent lab datasets. Every flag in a report links back to its source — nothing is scored behind a black box.
A product says “lab-tested” — what does that mean?
That result comes from an independent laboratory measurement — real nanograms-per-serving values and % of tolerable daily intake, not our estimate. Everything else is modeled; lab-tested results are labeled so you always know which is which.
Why did a product's score change?
Scores reflect our ruleset and source data at the time of the scan. When we refine the methodology or a database updates (new research, reformulations), the same product can score differently. Your history shows the score at scan time.
Subscriptions & billing
Is Unpaq free?
Yes — 5 full analyses every day, resetting at midnight. Premium removes the cap and unlocks your exposure index, trends, full lab data, and report export. It's $29.99/year with a 3-day free trial, or $4.99/month.
I paid but the app still shows the paywall.
Almost always fixable: open the paywall again and tap “Restore purchases.” Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID or Google account you purchased with — a different store account is the usual culprit. Still stuck? Email us.
How do I cancel my subscription or trial?
It's handled by your app store, not inside Unpaq. iPhone: Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Unpaq → Cancel. Android: Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Unpaq → Cancel. Heads up: deleting the app does not cancel — you have to cancel in the store.
How do I get a refund?
Refunds are issued by the store you purchased through, under their policies — Apple via reportaproblem.apple.com, Google via the Play refund page. We don't see or control payment details, so we can't issue them directly.
Does my subscription work on both iPhone and Android?
Subscriptions are tied to the store you bought from. A purchase made on the App Store doesn't transfer to Google Play, and vice versa.
Data & privacy
Do I need an account?
No. Unpaq works without sign-up — usage is tied to an anonymous, hashed device identifier so your quota and history work without us ever knowing who you are.
Does Unpaq sell my scan history?
No. Reports live on your device, anything synced is keyed to that anonymous device ID, and we don't sell or share personal data for advertising. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
I reinstalled and my history is gone.
Scan history is stored on your device, so uninstalling removes it. If you'd like us to purge any synced records too, email us with the device ID shown under Profile and we'll wipe them.
What happens to photos I scan?
They're sent to our backend just long enough for the label reader to extract a product identity, then discarded. They're never stored or used to train models.
App issues
A scan fails or returns an error.
Check your connection first — product lookups need data. If a photo scan keeps failing, try the barcode instead. Persistent errors: update to the latest version, and if it's still happening, send us a screenshot.
The app crashes or won't open.
Update to the latest version — most crashes are already-fixed bugs. If it still won't open after an update and reinstall, tell us your device model and OS version and we'll investigate.

I found a data error or want to suggest a product.
Send it to [email protected] — product corrections, new data sources, and swap suggestions all go straight to the team.
I'm a creator or researcher and want to collaborate.
Email [email protected] with a bit about what you have in mind. Research partnerships, press, and creator collabs are all welcome.
